SonaExchange: Backup and Recovery Solution for Exchange

Sonasoft’s patent-pending solution enables the rapid recovery of emails at the point-of-failure without losing a single email, calendar, contact and other important information. SonaExchange coupled with SonaVault, incorporates single instance storage (SIS) and compression techniques which offers SMBs the capability to selectively compress files as necessary to optimize server space. Additionally, the use of stubbing when used in conjunction with SonaVault, message contents, including attachments will be saved in the archive database, leaving behind a small pointer stub in the body of the email. This approach can further reduce the size of the Exchange server by up to 80%. This ultimately results in requiring fewer servers, so capital expenditures can be significantly reduced.

Features of Sonasoft Exchange backup and recovery solutions

SonaExchange is comprised of several key features which differentiate it from competing products available on the market.

1. Exchange Backup and Recovery of Information Stores

The Exchange Information Store (EIS) is a central component to the Microsoft Exchange Server. The EIS consists of a number of components including storage groups, mailbox store, or public folders which can be shared amongst several employees. With Information Store protection, SonaExchange Protector can recover Exchange Server to a point-in-time or point-of-failure without losing any emails.

2. Email Recovery

Flexibility is an inherent component to the SonaExchange solution. By providing the user with multiple level of protection, losses due to total system failure or disaster can be averted. With increasing usage of smart phones for retrieving emails, add the chances of emails deletion by the user accidentally. To help recovering emails in this situation, SonaExchange Protector takes a pro-active role by performing the backup at the mailbox level and store emails in Microsoft Outlook PST format. When needed, single or multiple emails, contacts, calendar or any message item can be recovered with a simple and powerful SonaExchange Web Console. As the messages are stored in PST format, backup file can be opened with Microsoft Outlook thus providing an additional option to search and retrieve required emails.

3. Primary Exchange Replication

Sonasoft patent pending unique and extremely powerful technology provides replication of the Microsoft Exchange Server at the mailbox level. SonaExchange Replicator introduced a concept of plans with which group of mailboxes can be associated. Such plans can be scheduled for key executives based on hierarchical management structure, department, employee or other trigger points. Replication can be configured as frequently or infrequently as required to achieve the Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and Recovery Time Objective (RTO). This unique approach allows administrators to replicate a few or all mailboxes or fail-over selected mailboxes to test disaster recovery scenario. In addition, an administrator can move a mailbox from one location to another if a user moves and fail-over and fail-back without transferring all the data back to the old Primary Exchange Server after it comes back online. SonaExchange Replicator unlike the competition keeps Standby Exchange Server online and does not transfer physical corruptions as replication takes place at the mailbox level by restoring emails to the Standby Exchange Server.

Sonasoft’s Primary Exchange Server replication is an inherent, hardware agnostic, SonaExchange capability to seamlessly switch to a Standby Exchange Server, without loss of data protection capabilities.

When coupled with SonaVault Email Archiving software solution, SonaVault archiving agent is pre-configured on the Standby Exchange Server. Archiving commences as soon as the Standby Exchange Server assumes the primary active - role. With competing solutions, the standby server does not go online until Primary Exchange Server is taken offline; at that point archiving needs to be configured, as a result, no emails will be archived during this period.

4. Microsoft Exchange Server Migration

Migrating from one Microsoft Exchange Server version to another is always a big challenge to IT staff. Sonasoft’s patent pending approach of Microsoft Exchange Server Migration using SonaExchange Migrator helps SMBs to seamlessly migrate from Microsoft Exchange Server 2000, 2003 to 2007 and from 2000, 2003, and 2007 to 2010 without any downtime.

SonaExchange Migrator replicates mailboxes from Primary Exchange Server to a new Microsoft Exchange Server running a higher version of Exchange than the Primary Exchange. During the replication process, users still access Primary Exchange Server. Once the replication is completed; fail-over can be initiated. This re-points all users to the mailboxes on the new migrated server. At that point, all emails can be sent and received through the new server.

Today, SonaExchange is the only high-availability, disaster recovery and failover/failback solution that provides both backup and replication as part of a single integrated solution. In order to meet this requirement using other solutions, users would have to purchase multiple products from different vendors to achieve similar capability.
